Packing cubes keep a bag organised, but not all cubes are the same. The main choice is between standard cubes and compression cubes, and the right pick depends on how you travel.
Standard cubes
Simple zipped fabric boxes. They are light, cheap and good for sorting clothes by type. They do not reduce volume much, but they make it easy to find things and to unpack quickly.
Compression cubes
These have an extra zip that squeezes air and bulk out. They can help fit more into a carry-on, but a packed compression cube is firm and can be harder to fit around the corners of a bag. Be careful not to overpack and exceed baggage weight limits.
What to compare
- Fabric weight and zip quality, since cheap zips are the usual failure.
- Mesh panel on top, handy for seeing contents.
- Sizes in the set. A mix of small, medium and large is more flexible.
- Whether a dedicated shoe or laundry bag is included.
Our rule of thumb
If you travel with a carry-on and often run out of space, try compression cubes. If you mainly want to stay organised, standard cubes are enough and lighter.
