A reading corner does not need a big room. A comfortable seat, good light and a few soft touches are enough. Here is a simple formula, with what to check for each part.
Start with a comfortable seat
An armchair, a small loveseat or even a floor cushion with back support can work. Check the seat height and depth, and whether the cushion feels supportive for long sitting.
Add the right light
Reading needs focused light. A floor lamp that arcs over the seat or a clip-on light works well. Choose a warm tone for evening reading and make sure the light does not cast a glare on the page.
Layer soft textiles
- A throw blanket within arm's reach.
- One or two cushions for back or arm support.
- A small rug to define the corner and warm the floor.
Keep essentials within reach
- A side table or stool for a drink and a book.
- A basket or small shelf for the books you are currently reading.
- A coaster, so cups do not mark the table.
Small space tip
Use a corner near a window for daylight, and keep the area tidy. A calm, uncluttered corner is more inviting than a crowded one.
