A cosy bedroom rarely needs a full makeover. Three things do most of the work: what you sleep under, how the room is lit in the evening, and how it smells. Here is how to get each one right on a modest budget.
Start with the bedding
Layers are what make a bed look and feel inviting. A fitted sheet and duvet come first, then a throw across the foot of the bed and one or two extra pillows.
Stick to two or three colours that sit well together. Neutral bedding with one textured throw looks calm and is easy to refresh later.
- Cotton percale feels crisp and cool, which suits people who sleep warm.
- Cotton sateen and brushed cotton feel softer and warmer.
- Linen softens with every wash and has a relaxed, slightly rumpled look.
- Check the thread count and fibre content on the listing, and remember that a very high thread count is not always a sign of better quality.
Warm light in the evening
Bright white overhead light works against winding down. Swap it for lamps at eye level or below.
- Choose warm white bulbs, usually listed around 2700K.
- Use a dimmable bulb or a lamp with several brightness levels.
- Add a small bedside lamp on each side if space allows.
- String lights along a headboard or shelf add a soft glow without taking up room.
A gentle scent
Scent is the finishing touch, and less is more in a bedroom. A reed diffuser gives a steady, low-level fragrance with no flame. If you prefer candles, burn them only while you are awake and in the room, and never leave a flame unattended.
A simple order of upgrades
- First, a good set of sheets and a throw.
- Second, lamps with warm bulbs.
- Third, a diffuser or candle for scent.
- Finally, tidy the bedside table so the room feels calm.
