A good notebook or planner is one you actually use. The layout matters more than the brand. Here is a short guide to the common formats and the paper details worth checking.
Common layouts
- Dot grid: flexible. Good for lists, sketches and bullet-style journaling.
- Lined: simple and familiar, best for writing.
- Weekly planner: gives an overview and suits people who like planning ahead.
- Daily planner: more space for each day, suits busy schedules.
- Undated planner: lets you start any time and skip days without guilt.
Paper quality
Paper weight is listed in gsm, grams per square metre. Around 100 gsm or more usually reduces ink show-through, especially with gel and felt-tip pens. Thin paper can bleed with markers.
Binding and size
- Lay-flat binding is easier to write in.
- A5 is a popular balance between size and portability.
- A ribbon marker and a back pocket are useful extras.
Choosing
If you are unsure, start with an undated weekly planner and a dot grid notebook. They cover most needs, and you can adjust after a month.
