Candle descriptions can be confusing. Names sound lovely but say little about the actual smell. This guide explains scent families, wax types and the details worth checking on the product page.
Understand scent families
Most candle scents fall into a few families. Knowing which you like makes choosing much easier.
- Woody: cedar, sandalwood, smoky notes. Often described as warm and grounding.
- Gourmand: vanilla, cinnamon, baked sugar. Sweet and comforting.
- Fresh and green: eucalyptus, pine, herbs. Lighter and clean.
- Floral: lavender, rose, jasmine. Soft, can feel stronger in small rooms.
Wax types
Soy wax and coconut-blend waxes are popular for a clean-looking burn. Paraffin is common and often cheaper. Beeswax tends to cost more. Pick based on budget and preference, and read the label for the exact blend.
Details worth checking
- Burn time listed by the maker, to compare value between sizes.
- Wick type, and whether the brand recommends trimming it before each use.
- Container: a thick glass or ceramic jar is more stable than thin glass.
- Reviews that mention how strongly the candle fills a room, not only how it smells.
Safety basics
Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep it away from curtains and children, and let it cool before moving it. If you want zero flame, a flameless LED candle is the safest cosy option.
